Lehto’s Pasties

When my mom was in high school, her parents had a boarder who gave them this recipe.  His family had a Pastie stand in Upper Peninsula Michigan (print recipe).

Pasties

1 1/4 pounds sirloin steak, chopped

4 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped

2 medium onions, chopped

1/4 cup rutabaga, finely chopped

3 1/2 cups flour, sifted

1 cup shortening

1/4 cup beef suet, finely chopped

water

salt and pepper

Rutabaga

In a  large bowl combine sirloin, potatoes, onions, and rutabaga.  Set aside.

Steak, onions, potatoes, and rutabaga.

In another bowl cut shortening and suet into flour until the consistency of coarse crumbs.  Add enough water (about 1/2 or more if needed) to make a soft dough.  Roll out a portion on a lightly floured board to make an 8 inch circle.  We used a small plate to put on the dough and then cut around it.

Cutting out the dough

Put about 3/4 cup of filling on each circle and sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.

Filling on crust

Moisten 1/2 edge of pastie, fold over and seal by crimping with fork.

Folded pastie

Bake in 375º oven for 35 minutes.  Reduce heat to 325º and bake 15 more minutes or until lightly browned.
