My Best Gingerbread

This recipe came from my Dad’s mom.  This is very good served warm with cold applesauce and a little whipped cream on top if you like it.

1/2 cup butter or shortening
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 egg, beaten
2 1/2 cups flour, sifted
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger
1/8 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup molasses
1 cup water, hot

Cream butter and sugar.  Add beaten egg. 

Measure and sift dry ingredients.

Combine molasses and hot water.

Add dry ingredients to first mixture alternately with liquid, a small amount at a time and beat after each addition until smooth.

Bake in a 9x9x2′ greased and floured pat at 350º for 45 minutes.
